The Opening (2019)

Snæfellsnes, Iceland

The story behind this photo is actually quite funny
My colleagues were having a beer with me in a bar to wait for the night with the predicted Northern Lights. We had a chat with the owner and told her about our plan to photograph the Northern Lights over this arch. She just said that the lights hardly ever appear above this arch. Rather in the other direction. As dusk slowly fell, we left the bar and it was bound to happen, we stepped out of the door and at that exact moment we saw something in the sky right above the arch. "That's a cloud" I thought, but to be on the safe side we took a quick photo. "Shit guys, that's green!" And indeed, it wasn't a cloud but the Lady Aurora. The beginning of an incredible Northern Lights show that I will remember for the rest of my life. © copyright by Nick Schmid.
